- Alvin Ailey was a choreographer in the 20th century
- He changed dance as we know it
- He created the first all black dance company, which was unheard of in his time
- This really changed the way people looked at the arts and in particular dance and culture within it
- Due to his courage and risk when he was beginning his own company, this had a large impact on what dance is today
- He is now a very respected figure within the world of dance
